Construction Specialties Press Release, June 26, 2014
Construction Specialties, Inc. (C/S), a leading manufacturer of high performing specialty building products, has announced its line of Acrovyn® Doors has received Cradle to Cradle certifications for its standard door models at the Bronze level, making them the first such products in the building products industry to receive this rigorous and comprehensive environmental certification from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
“Having our doors Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze is just the latest step in our commitment to making our products healthier for both people and the environment,” said Ken Barbour, Executive General Manager at C/S. “We want to make sure we are still delivering the durability of our doors but with healthier materials in place.”
C/S has a longstanding commitment to manufacturing products in accordance with the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard, a third-party, multi-attribute, continuous improvement methodology that evaluates products in five areas: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Since 2008, over 40 C/S products in six product lines have achieved Cradle to Cradle certification at the Gold or Silver level. Acrovyn Doors are the first C/S products certified under the newest revision, Version 3.0.
“Construction Specialties is one of our earliest adopters, and their commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in their products helps pave the path for future visionaries,” said Bridgett Luther, President of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. “We have entered into another trade through the industry’s first Cradle to Cradle Certified door – it truly is an exciting benchmark.” During the assessment process performed by accredited assessor McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC (MBDC), Construction Specialties worked to source suitable alternatives to certain adhesives and fire retardant products, ultimately yielding approved use of new components. In pursuit of certification, the different nutrient potentials of the two certifications in the FSC-Particleboard and Mineral Core doors drastically affect how the products can be reutilized at the end of use—from both the biological and the technical levels. Fulfilling the continuous improvement criteria of the Cradle to Cradle Certified program, Acrovyn Doors have committed to continued assessment of its products’ chemical compositions.
Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, Version 4, better known as LEED v4, encourages the use of materials that have available lifecycle information. Since Acrovyn Doors have achieved Cradle to Cradle certifications at the Bronze level, they qualify to help in earning one point in the Materials and Resources Credit, Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Material Ingredients. This credit rewards project teams for selecting products whose chemical ingredients are inventoried.
