Cradle to Cradle® Design Building Product Screening & Specification Consulting
A Cradle to Cradle® inspired building would include materials that are safe and healthy for humans and the environment and can be easily disassembled and cycled into new products. The Cradle to Cradle Certified™ program is helping architects and building professionals identify products that are designed using the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy. While the program is growing quickly, there is not a certified product in every building product category. Architects and specifiers are challenged with how to select materials that may best meet Cradle to Cradle® standards when no certified option exists.
MBDC is providing architectural, engineering consulting services and product specification support on building projects for which the goal is to have a Cradle to Cradle® inspired building. This service, also referred to as the Internal Check for Cradle to Cradle® Potential, provides quick feedback on the Cradle to Cradle® potential of products based on publicly available information. This screen provides building professionals with guidance in selecting the most sustainable products for a project and provides an analysis of each product in the categories of Human Health, Ecological Health, Nutrient Potential, Recycled/Renewable Content, and Energy Strategy, and Social Fairness to create a system for comparison. Upon completion of this Internal Check for Cradle® Potential, the client receives a report summarizing the results of MBDC’s review.
Communications Guidelines for the Building Product Screening:
The results of this report are intended to aid building professionals in their choice of building materials when a Cradle to Cradle Certified™ product is not immediately available or viable for the intended use. The report is intended to be shared only with project stakeholders and the review of the products are not equivalent to an assessment for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ program. The results do not render the product(s) either approved or endorsed by MBDC. Any reviewed product can not be described as Cradle to Cradle® or Cradle to Cradle Certified™. Only products audited by the Cradle to Cradle® Products Innovation Institute may carry the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ marks under license. Marketing materials for reviewed products may not mention this evaluation by MBDC without permission. This exercise can provide a product manufacturer with initial feedback to gauge a product’s fit for certification, and if you are interested in pursuing certification you can contact MBDC to pursue next steps. Please visit the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Program page to find out the steps required to have a product certified.
Cradle to Cradle Design™ and LEED Building Certification
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Certification is the leading certification for green buildings, and many cities, localities, and universities are requiring that new buildings meet the LEED standards. While the LEED program does not certify building products, it does offer various credits for buildings that use Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products. MBDC can provide support to product manufacturers to help them understand how Cradle to Cradle® can help them contribute to the LEED certification program.
The Cradle to Cradle Certified™ program contributes to LEED Credits in the following ways
- LEED Version 4 – MRc4: Building product disclosure and optimization – Material Ingredients
LEED v4 goes into effect in November 2013, and this new Materials & Resources credit applies to several ratings systems, including BD+C, ID+C, and EBOM. The use of Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products in a building can earn up to two points depending on the level of the certified products and the amount of products used in the building. Click here for the Credit Language
- LEED 2009 – Innovation in Design Credit – Any building project seeking LEED certification may apply for Innovation in Design credits for using a certain amount of Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products in the building. The attached document outlines a previous Credit Interpretation Ruling (CIR) that can be used as a basis to apply for the credit. Since previous Credit Interpretation Rulings are no longer precedent setting, you may modify the formula and add other features in your application that make your building innovative. All Innovation in Design Credits are awarded on a project-by-project basis and the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) does not guarantee that this point will be awarded even if this formula is met.
- LEED for Homes 2008 – MR 2.2 Environmentally Preferable Materials – Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products can contribute to the Environmentally Preferable Materials Credit.
- Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products may also contain specific attributes that awarded separate LEED credits, including FSC Certification, recycled content, & low VOC emissions. MBDC can product manufacturers collect the data needed to contribute to other LEED credits.
