MBDC recognizes that an organization is a collection of individuals and groups with specific roles, but also acts as a fully functioning “whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.” To help facilitate a client’s capacity for self-analysis and sustainability integration across the enterprise, MBDC condenses an organization into the following three functional spheres:
-
Products & Materials - e.g., selecting safe and recyclable/biodegradable materials, optimizing ingredient chemistry, designing a product for recyclability, keeping materials in closed-loop flows among multiple product life cycles -
Operations - e.g., applying Cradle to Cradle thinking to internal processes, utilizing safe process chemicals, maximizing renewable energy use, minimizing carbon/water footprint, creating a healthy workplace -
Organization - e.g., educating internal staff on Cradle to Cradle, adopting and pursuing an eco-effective vision, creating governance structures that are both top-down and bottom-up to maximize the full value of staff skills and perspectives, integrating the Cradle to Cradle principles into all decision-making and success metrics
While it can be useful to consider these three spheres separate and align personnel within each one, MBDC also helps clients understand and navigate the critical connections and synergies among these functional areas.
A client organization may work to integrate the Cradle to Cradle® framework within one activity area (e.g., pursuing renewable energy use within Operations), focus its efforts on one entire functional sphere (e.g., across Operations), or advance across all three functional spheres at once. Individual achievements tangibly demonstrate a client’s efforts toward optimized sustainability (‘eco-effectiveness’) and are means to achieving that goal.
Change towards a Cradle to Cradle perspective requires an organization to reorient its objectives, employ innovation and creativity, prevent problems and waste from being created in the first place, utilize more comprehensive metrics, and engage all stakeholders in both the vision and implementation of a positive future. MBDC’s primary role is to help guide the client enhance its sustainability performance and achieve the Cradle to Cradle vision at whatever scale it is ready to pursue.
